Second, indicating advanced cultivation to clarify the great power. Initially cultivating impurity, one advances into the eight liberations (aṣṭa-vimokṣa) and the major impurity. What is called 'major': merely contemplating the direct retribution of oneself and others is called minor impurity, which is the contemplation of the nine visualizations. If one also contemplates the dependent retribution, it is called major impurity: namely, houses are like grave mounds, coins are like dead snakes, soup is like liquid excrement, rice is like white maggots, robes are like foul hide, mountains are like heaps of flesh, pools are like rivers of pus, parks and forests are like dried bones, and rivers and oceans are like flowing filth—this is called major impurity. It is also called major liberation (vimokṣa): 'turning away' (vi-) means turning away from pure and clean five desires; 'renouncing' (-mokṣa) means renouncing this attached mind.
