4.181

初、引經。儒童者，儒，仁也，謂仁賢童子也。習應者，謂修習與空相應也。四諦因緣各舉初後並略中間，故俱云乃至諦緣。既是法忍菩薩相應之法，驗知理深二乘不及。彼通衍三，今取圓教諦緣相應成今空慧。

First, citing the sūtra. 'Youth Ru' (Māṇava): 'ru' means benevolence; it refers to the benevolent and virtuous youth. 'Practicing in resonance': it means cultivating practice in resonance with emptiness. For the four truths and conditioned arising, each cites the beginning and end and omits the middle; hence both say 'and so forth down to the truths and conditions'. Since it is the Dharma resonant with the bodhisattva of Dharma-forbearance, we verify and know that the principle is profound and beyond the reach of the two vehicles. That [sūtra] pervades the three Mahāyāna [teachings]; here we take the round teaching's resonance with truths and conditions to form the present wisdom of emptiness.
