4.187

初、正斥二乘。所修三學，不為眾生，不成佛法，是故名為自調自度。《大論》云「二乘戒名自調，定名自度，慧名自淨。緣覺雖有少分慈悲，不能廣益，故同名自。」

First, directly reproaching the two vehicles. The three trainings they cultivate are not for sentient beings and do not accomplish the Buddha-Dharma; therefore they are called self-regulating and self-saving. The *Great Treatise* (*Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa*) says: 'For the two vehicles, morality is called self-regulation, concentration is called self-saving, and wisdom is called self-purification. Although Pratyekabuddhas have a small portion of compassion, they cannot widely benefit [others]; hence they are equally called "self".'
