Second, explaining the erecting of the banner. 'Surpassing all practices' is the Dharma-banner samādhi. The merits of myriad practices all serve as its retinue, none failing to return to this principal. Therefore, this samādhi is what all practices look up to. 'Soldiers looking up to the signal flag': a hand gesture is called *hui* (signal). The *Classic of Documents* says: 'Holding a yellow battle-axe in the left hand and grasping a white yak-tail banner in the right, he signaled.' The *Art of Military Authority* says: 'The general then grasped the yak-tail banner to direct the host and swore an oath to them.' It also says: 'Hearing the drum, one advances; hearing the gong, one halts. Following his directing, the five battle formations are put in order.' From 'The three virtues' downward, presenting the essence of the samādhi. If its essence were not neither vertical nor horizontal, how could it surpass all practices? How could it crush the five entrenchments? How could it destroy the heavenly demon? The essence and function of the non-defiled, neutral supernormal powers are like this.
