First, identifying the meaning based on the name. What the great expedient means do has origin and traces: taking wisdom to realize the real is called the origin; setting up conventions in accordance with sentiments is called traces. Although origin and traces are distinguished, only a single name is established. Formerly, from the secret origin the secret traces were manifested; now, through the secret traces the secret origin is revealed. At the time of manifesting the traces, this secret name merely explains worldly commanding of the spirit hosts with secret stratagems. Now, recounting the virtue of protecting the sūtra before the World-Honoured One, it is fitting that the origin be revealed; this secret name ought to explain principle and wisdom. Not being known by one-sided and lesser worthy and holy ones, it is called secret. Once Saṃjñāya's origin and traces are manifested here, this verifies that the Four Heavenly Kings and all devas and spirits all manifest traces and transformations from the origin. Therefore, the present explanation discusses the secret meaning in detail, which not only can reveal the origin and traces of the devas, but can also display the substance, tenets, and function of the sūtra.
