維昔先稟法智大師，甞講次撰記，解釋經疏。方終一十七品，會乃歸寂。其最後〈讚佛〉一品，經旨幽邈、疏科尚簡，而鉤索深隱固亦難矣。予雖不敏，忝久親講授，遂纂集舊聞繫諸卷末。亦冀覽者豈貽續貂之譏云。

In the past, having received instruction from the Great Master Fazhi, I was writing this record to explain the sūtra commentary while he lectured. Just as he finished seventeen chapters, it happened that he passed away. Regarding the very last one, the 'Chapter on Praising the Buddha', the purport of the sūtra is profound and distant, and the commentary's structural outline is still brief, so searching out the deep and hidden was indeed difficult. Although I am not clever, I was privileged to personally attend his lectures for a long time, and so I collected past teachings and appended them to the end of the scroll. I also hope that readers will not level against me the ridicule of 'attaching a dog's tail to sable fur'.
