First, clarifying keeping in terms of the essence. This principle of not killing: if one does not understand the inherent inclusion of the nine realms, but merely says that penetrating all phenomena is principle, or that the entirety of waves is water, this still confuses the Common and Separate [teachings] and does not reveal the Perfect cultivation. Hence Jingxi says: 'If one does not speak of inherent inclusion, it belongs to the Separate Teaching.' Therefore, one must penetrate that the provisionally combined body, the three delusions of folly and craving, and the substantial dharmas of the three categories are all fundamentally included in the nature, and that the nature is without difference; hence it is called 'the single characteristic.' The nature is not dark bondage; it is termed 'illumination and liberation.' Since they are inherently included in the nature, how could they be harmed or destroyed? Folly and craving are the seeds; provisional and real are the fruits; their entire essence is the nature itself, so how could the nature arise or perish? In such a wonderful contemplation, obstacles are themselves virtues without awaiting transformation and eradication; only this is keeping the precept of non-killing of principle.
