Second, from "Thusness..." onward: explaining the meaning. The two kinds of reward induced by cultivation are precisely the union of initial awakening with original awakening, where initial and original [awakening] are taken as object and wisdom; because these two are not different, they are named "Thusness." That each has two Thusnesses is because wisdom is such as the object of Thusness, and the object is such as the wisdom of Thusness. Furthermore, bodhi is named Thusness, with the wisdom of Thusness being that which can adapt and merge; and the dharma-nature is named the object of Thusness, being that which is adapted to and merged with. The fitting together of a box and its lid first illustrates the meaning of adaptation. Although the box and its lid fit together, their boundaries still remain; hence the mixture of water and milk further illustrates their mutual merging: this is merging to become a single characteristic. Initial awakening and original awakening are two in meaning but one in substance, exactly like this.
