Second, from "Response Buddhas..." onward: concluding that all response Buddhas are like this. Since every Buddha completely realizes the three bodies, how could the length of the lifespan of those beings to whom the response body [appears] not conform to them and respectively display both measures? Therefore, Amitābha manifests long and can also manifest short; Śākyamuni manifests short and can also manifest long. Thus the thirty-sixth fascicle of the Great Treatise says: "One should know that Śākyamuni Buddha has yet another pure land, like the land of Amitābha Buddha. Amitābha Buddha also has an unadorned and impure land, like the land of Śākyamuni Buddha." Again, the thirty-eighth fascicle says: "Because Jambudvīpa here is evil, Śākyamuni's lifespan should be short. Because other places are good, the Buddha's lifespan should be long." Thus the twenty-second fascicle of the Nirvāṇa [Sūtra] says: "To the west, past thirty-two sands of the Gaṅgā, there is the country of Invincibility; its adornments are like the World of Peace and Joy, and I appear in the world in that land." These all follow the capacities of beings.
