First, generally showing the two transgressions. As for these phenomenal and principle transgressions: if one does not understand the contrary function of inherent inclusion and the Dharma-gate of killing, but merely interprets them as being able to manifest adverse appearances out of compassion, how could the practices of the bodhisattvas of the preceding three teachings not do this? Hence the Commentary on the Universal Gate explains that to accomplish the Dharma-gate of wrath, one constantly mindful of Avalokiteśvara. Therefore, one must understand the intention of inherent killing; only then does compassion become conditionless. Hence it is said: 'Only killing and only compassion,' which is named 'transgression having grasped its principle.'
