First, directly showing [the meaning]. This conceptually corresponds to the Separate Teaching: sequentially cultivating the Path-concomitant [precepts] of the three truths, and so forth. 'Constant' is the provisional contemplation, which is praised by the wise and is the precept of mastery. 'Impermanent' is the wisdom of emptiness, which is the precepts conforming to the Path and of non-attachment. Previously emptiness came first and provisionality next; here, for rhetorical convenience, the wisdom of emptiness is placed second. The phrase 'equating wisdom' refers to the wisdom of the Middle. It is the precepts conforming to concentration and the complete precepts; partially attaining these two corresponds to the first bhūmi. One is born into the Land of True Retribution, called the Ocean of the Flower Store. The Buddha-eye is partially revealed, and the four eyes are thoroughly harmonized; hence it is called 'partially attaining the five eyes.' The various sense faculties are likewise. Lifespan is wisdom-life, which already belongs to the mental faculty. The sūtra says 'the various faculties and also lifespan,' so both must be spoken together.
