Fourth, from "practitioner" onward, [the text] exhorts one to first seek the place of repentance. Yet as for the place of repentance, who does not possess it? What phenomenon is ever apart from it? It is merely due to fundamental delusion that the eyes are filled [with it] without seeing it, and the entire mind is unaware of it. Therefore the text below states: "Before the Ten Powers, one does not recognize the Buddhas." Exhorting one to seek it means that one must draw near to a good teacher and rely on the wondrous teaching, diligently listening and questioning, carefully reading and reflecting. If one does so, one will certainly, through that which expresses, recognize the substance expressed, transcending thought, indescribable by form or name—this is indeed the principle of Dharma-nature that is sought. This principle is supreme and wondrous; being that upon which the method of repentance relies, it is therefore called the "place". If one establishes the gate of practice relying on this place, only then can it be called a Mahāyāna repentance.
