Second, from "Seeing is also" onward, clarifying the body. In interpreting the title and classifying the teaching, this sūtra belongs to the Shared [Teaching]. This teaching clarifies that the Buddha's sixteen-foot body and Noble and Special Body are seen differently in one body; hence it is called the unified body. Now in this chamber there is an assembly of the three vehicles; among the three, the bodhisattvas of sharp faculties can deeply contemplate emptiness and see the principle of non-emptiness. The principle of non-emptiness is precisely that sentient beings and the Buddha share the identical awakened nature. Therefore, though they see the Buddha, the Buddha does not come from outside; whether according with the great or according with the small, all are boundless; hence it says that the four Buddhas share the Noble and Special Body, and the application of body and wisdom is one and eternal. How could it be that only the Buddhas are neither two nor distinct? They are also not different from their disciples; hence it says the assembly is one. Although there has not yet been an opening and discarding, the sharp persons see them identically. If dull bodhisattvas and persons of the two vehicles, since they see only emptiness, perceive the four Buddhas arriving from outside, grasping the bodily limits as merely response and transformation; when the Buddhas are still distinct from one another, how could the disciples be the same? Due to the differences among the three vehicles, it says the assembly is manifold.
