First, showing the characteristics of contemplation. As for the four truths, the four wisdoms, and even the delusions of view and thought discussed under each truth, what teaching does not speak of them? Now, since the explanation of doctrinal meaning is exclusively based on the perfect [teaching], the contemplation elucidated here does not pertain to the [other] three teachings. The four heavens must represent the principle of the truth of non-action; the four kings represent the wonderful wisdom free of conditions; illuminating phenomena as being principle is called protecting the realm of the truths; realizing that bondage is liberation is called protecting the mental factors; expounding this for others is called protecting the world. The delusions of view and thought of both common and distinct [teachings], being identical in substance as obstacles, are called ghosts and spirits. When the Lotus [Sūtra] refers to these and the like, there is a slight difference: there, ghosts and spirits merely serve as metaphors for the five sharp [afflictions], while insects and birds serve as metaphors for the five dull [afflictions]. Here, both sharp and dull are categorized as ghosts and spirits, merely taking their shared aspect.
