Commentary: The twelfth virtue: unvainly benefiting others. In Sanskrit tiryag-yoni, which translated according to its meaning is 'animals'. In Sanskrit preta, translated according to its meaning as 'hungry ghosts', also termed pretāḥ. In Sanskrit manuṣya, translated according to its meaning as 'humans'. The names of the three destinies of devas, asuras, and narakas, as well as the meaning of the six destinies, are as in our Commentary on the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka. Skillfully knowing mental dispositions, they manifest their bodies within the five destinies, manifesting forms and preaching the Dharma through the power of skillful means, so that none among those who see or hear them fail to receive benefit. Because they are able to accomplish four dharmas, they can transform sentient beings so that all receive benefit. Thus the first fascicle of the Viśeṣacintabrahmaparipṛcchā states: '1. Always seeking to benefit and bring peace to sentient beings; 2. personally relinquishing one's own pleasure; 3. having a harmonious and patient mind; 4. eradicating arrogance.'
