Commentary: Third, the listing of names. There are fifty-three [bodhisattvas]. Their virtue is vast and their renown exalted; those who see or hear [them] obtain benefit. They cannot be listed in full, so [the sūtra] briefly adduces this many. Among them, their names are established either from their fundamental vows or from their virtuous practices, establishing their names through the superior benefits of self and other. The first two [concern] preaching the Dharma, and the latter two [concern] energetic exertion. In the pairing of preaching the Dharma and cultivating energetic exertion: both are able to subdue the two kinds of four māras, and thus they turn the wheel of the Dharma without obstruction. Having attained non-retrogression in preaching, they therefore turn the irreversible wheel; hence 'unobstructed'. Propagating the Dharma without resting is because they compassionately care for sentient beings. They constantly give rise to the mind [of awakening] to turn the wheel of the Dharma for the sake of beings, because they have attained non-retrogression in delightful eloquence. Because they have attained delightful eloquence with uninterrupted discernment, they constantly give rise to the mind to turn [the wheel]. In benefiting themselves they are constantly diligent, hence called 'Ever Energetic'. In benefiting others they constantly urge themselves on, hence called 'Never Resting'. Or, [these form] a pairing of benefiting others and benefiting oneself.
