Commentary: In the six verses below, the fourth section, among the chapters of the dissemination section, encourages and praises upholding and reading. Within it there are three parts: first, one verse indicates the encouragement to uphold and read; next, three verses explain the attainment of benefits; finally, two verses teach the protocol for upholding. This is the first. The Madhyāntavibhāga-śāstra contains a verse on the ten Dharma practices: ‘Namely making offerings and copying, / giving to others, listening, reading, / upholding, and expounding, / reciting, reflecting, and cultivating.’ 1. Making offerings; 2. Copying; 3. Giving to others; 4. Listening; 5. Reading; 6. Upholding; 7. Expounding; 8. Reciting; 9. Reflecting; 10. Cultivating. The first eight are the wisdom of listening; reflecting is the wisdom of reflection; cultivating is the wisdom of cultivation. Here, ‘hearing this sūtra’ is listening; ‘expounding’ is explaining; ‘presenting offerings’ is the first practice. By briefly presenting three practices: listening and making offerings are self-benefit, while expounding is benefiting others; hence three are provisionally mentioned, though in reality there are ten kinds. As for rejoicing, in each of the ten Dharma practices there are four types: 1. Performing the ten Dharma practices oneself; 2. Teaching others; 3. Congratulating and consoling; 4. Rejoicing. Here it provisionally adduces the easiest, implicitly revealing the rest.
