Next, stating the present [exposition]: the Sanskrit pronunciation was corrupted in antiquity; nowadays it is correctly said as Suvarṇaprabhāsottamarājasūtra. Suvarṇa (here translated as gold) and prabhāsa (here translated as light)—the expression "golden light and radiance" arose for the sake of fluency. Uttama (here translated as most victorious), rāja (here translated as king), and sūtra (this meaning is string or cord-sūtra). It ought to be called the Suvarṇaprabhāsottamarājasūtra. The two words "gold" and "king" are purely metaphors, whereas "light", "radiance", and "most victorious" apply to both phenomenon and metaphor. Now, regarding this title, five interpretations are briefly made: 1. explaining according to the four dharmas of teaching, principle, practice, and fruition; 2. according to the Three Jewels; 3. according to bodhi and nirvāṇa; 4. according to phenomenon and metaphor; 5. according to person and dharma.
