Commentary: 'Having exhausted the fetters of existence,' following the treatise, should now be explained by the tenth phrase. This eleventh, 'having attained great mastery,' according to the treatise's order should be the fourth phrase; here it is the twelfth, explained by four phrases: the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh. As for the twelfth, 'abiding in pure precepts,' according to the treatise this should correspond to 'having done what was to be done'; the perfection of the training in morality is subsumed under the truth of the path, and this pure morality is precisely what was to be done; following the treatise, it is explained by the phrase itself. 'Skill in means, adorned with wisdom' are combined into a single phrase because they share the same causal cognition; according to the treatise this should correspond to 'having attained mastery of mind.' The treatise says: 'Because of expertly transcending the cognition of the path of seeing and the path of cultivation,' it is explained by the phrase itself. As for 'having realized the eight liberations,' following the treatise it should now be explained by the fourth phrase. As for the fifteenth phrase, 'having reached the other shore,' following the treatise it should now be explained by the fifteenth phrase. Following the sixteenth, there are four phrases where the lower explains the upper: that is, the first phrase is explained by the fourth phrase, the second phrase is explained by the sixth and seventh, the third phrase is explained by the ninth and tenth, and the fourth phrase is explained by the twelfth phrase. There are six phrases in the sūtra where the upper explains the lower: that is, the fifth phrase is explained by the fourth phrase, the tenth phrase is explained by the ninth, the eleventh phrase is explained by the tenth phrase, the twelfth phrase is explained by the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh phrases, the fifteenth phrase is explained by the fourth phrase, and the sixteenth phrase is explained by the fifteenth phrase. Three phrases are explained by themselves: namely, 'what was to be done having been completed,' 'abiding in pure precepts,' and 'skill in means, adorned with wisdom.' Two phrases are not explained: namely, 'their minds well liberated' and 'through wisdom well liberated.' One phrase applies to both upper and lower: namely, 'having abandoned all heavy burdens.' The verse says: / 'Lower explains upper in four, / Upper explains lower in six, / Three stand alone, two are not explained, / One applies across upper and lower.'
