Commentary: Explaining the assembly of bodhisattvas. The text is also divided into four parts. This is specifying their category and presenting their number, also as in the root *Fahua shu*. Fascicle 486 of the *Mahāprajñāpāramitāsūtra* explains at length the designation 'mahāsattva.' As stated across the sūtras and treatises, numbers vary between large and small; here it should mean a hundred parts of thousands of myriads of koṭis of bodhisattvas. Second, praising their virtues. There are twenty-five phrases in the sūtra text, divided into twenty-two kinds of virtue: 1. the virtue of possessing great supernormal powers; 2. the virtue of high renown relied upon by others; 3. the virtue of fulfilling cultivated causes; 4. the virtue of manifesting forms to benefit beings; 5. the virtue of possessing eloquence in preaching the Dharma; 6. the virtue of being free from all hindrances and defilements; 7. the virtue of continuing the Buddha's lineage without interruption; 8. the virtue of subduing the enmity of Māra; 9. the virtue of crushing all non-Buddhists; 10. the virtue of succeeding the Buddha in proclaiming the Dharma; 11. the virtue of adorning and purifying buddha-fields; 12. the virtue of unfailing benefit to others; 13. the virtue of possessing patience for self-benefit; 14. the virtue of constantly gathering in sentient beings; 15. the virtue of attending upon the Buddha without ceasing; 16. the virtue of inexhaustible vast vows; 17. the virtue of deeply planting good causes; 18. the virtue of comprehending the non-arising of phenomena; 19. the virtue of unshared objects of cognition; 20. the virtue of skillfully transforming beings; 21. the virtue of propagating the holy teachings; 22. the virtue of realizing phenomena without doubt.
