The commentary says: Having no such salvation, they therefore give rise to love and seeking. This is the simile of revering the Buddha as rare to encounter. The words “Yet that poor person” are a simile for ordinary beings and non-Buddhists whose minds are inferior and whose roots of goodness are meager and few. “Goes either to a king’s household” is a simile for their awakening, only then giving rise to the thought of the World-Honoured One being rare to meet and see; hence he is like a king. “Or a chief minister’s” is like a great bodhisattva. Their lifespans are also long, but for the sake of sentient beings they manifest them as brief, through which [sentient beings] are also awakened.
