Commentary: This clarifies that he is equipped with the three virtues; this is the virtue of elimination (prahāṇa-guṇa). Just as the Candrakāntā-samādhi in the Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra is able to provide coolness, moreover śīla is translated here as 'coolness', and coolness is itself nirvāṇa. Because morality can serve as the cause of cool nirvāṇa, it is called 'coolness'; therefore the moon is used as a metaphor for the virtue of elimination that is nirvāṇa. Hence a sūtra verse says, 'The Dharma takes discrimination as its refuge, the noble take nirvāṇa as their refuge.' And the Daśabhūmika-śāstra says, 'Just as swarms of bees rely on honey.' Serving as a refuge for the world is itself nirvāṇa, and nirvāṇa is the virtue of elimination.
