贊曰：方便默然。默然有五意：一為除譏，恐得稱讚即與他願。二為宜聞。三避相違。前言入涅槃，今復云常不入涅槃，與前相違。四顯佛德高，弟子尚能答問，況如來也。五他除疑，勝他說為證故。

Commentary: An expedient silence. The silence has five intentions: first, to remove reproach, fearing that upon receiving praise he would immediately grant another's wish; second, to allow the time to be ripe for hearing; third, to avoid contradiction, for having previously spoken of entering nirvāṇa, to now speak again of permanently not entering nirvāṇa would contradict what preceded; fourth, to reveal the exalted virtue of the Buddha, showing that a disciple is still able to answer the question, how much more so the Tathāgata; fifth, to remove the doubts of others, using the explanation of an eminent other as verification.
