贊曰：明其所以，有二：初示二乘不知、二能為勝因。此不能知，以聽此經能為報法生了二因，如天親菩薩等《般若論》說「於法為了因，亦為餘生因。報是法餘，有為始起，故為生因。」此能詮顯理行果故，依詮起行，能證法身，故為二因。

Commentary: Explaining the reason has two parts: first, showing that those of the two vehicles do not know it; second, that it can serve as a superior cause. 'This... cannot know': because listening to this sūtra can serve as the two causes—productive and illuminating—for the retribution dharma, as Bodhisattva Vasubandhu and others say in the Prajñā-śāstra: 'It serves as an illuminating cause for the Dharma, and also as a productive cause for the remainder. Retribution is the remainder of the Dharma, an arisen conditioned [phenomenon], and therefore it serves as a productive cause.' Because this expressive [teaching] reveals the principle, practice, and fruit, one generates practice by relying on the expressive teaching and can realize the dharmakāya; hence it serves as the two causes.
