Commentary: This clarifies that there is no characteristic of alteration, and therefore there are no relics. Regarding the "yellow bird," the old version says kokila, which is translated here as yellow bird; it should correspond to the huang-li-lou bird of this region. Another explanation says: There is no exact translation; in the Western regions there is this bird, shaped like a myna or dove, and yellow birds are small in form. It serves as an analogy for aging of the form skandha not pervading the three realms, and aging of portioned [existence] not pervading the undefiled grounds. The crow is slightly larger in form, serving as an analogy for aging of the four [mental] skandhas pervading the three realms, and as an analogy for aging of transformation pervading the undefiled grounds. Now both forms of aging in the Dharma and Reward [bodies] are absent, and therefore there are no relics.
