Commentary: The Buddha explains for him. The text is divided into three parts: first, stating the doubtful thoughts and enjoining them to listen; second, explaining directly for them; third, from "such wondrous practices you must diligently cultivate" downward, concluding with an exhortation to train. This is the first. Saying that having relics is an intentional teaching: the twelfth [fascicle] of the Samuccayavyākhyā says there are four kinds of intentional secrets: 1. inducing entry, 2. characteristics, 3. counteractive remedies, 4. transformation. Counteractive remedies are eight: 1. the obstacle of slighting the Buddha, 2. the obstacle of slighting the Dharma, 3. the obstacle of laziness, 4. the obstacle of being content with few wholesome roots, 5. the obstacle of lustful conduct, 6. the obstacle of arrogant conduct, 7. the obstacle of evil conduct, 8. the obstacle of indeterminate nature. Now, in order to eliminate the two obstacles of slighting the Buddha and laziness, he speaks of parinirvāṇa and leaving behind bodily relics; this is called an intentional teaching. "Listen with single-minded devotion": enjoining them to listen, turning the ear to listen closely, purifying and retaining, so as to give rise to the three wisdoms.
