贊曰：此釋示滅留舍利疑。初牒示滅及留舍利，後釋所以。初也。不言或時佛現涅槃及留舍利而言見者，欲顯佛常實無舍利，但眾生心自所感現。如起遠質以臨臺，睇影顏而俯己；乘駛舟而東還，矚凝沼已西流。

Commentary: This resolves doubts concerning the manifestation of extinction and the leaving behind of relics. First, it brings up the manifestation of extinction and the leaving behind of relics; second, it explains the reason. This is the first. It does not say that at times the Buddha manifests nirvāṇa and leaves behind relics, but rather says 'is observed', wishing to reveal that the Buddha is permanent and in reality has no relics; it is merely that they appear as evoked by the minds of sentient beings themselves. It is like raising a distant form to face a terrace, looking at the mirrored face while bowing down oneself; or boarding a swift boat returning east, observing the still pool as already flowing west.
