Commentary: The fourth major section of the chapter is the dispersal of the assembly after hearing [the teaching]. Merely mentioning that the four Buddhas disappeared and Ruciraketu returned to his chamber, without discussing the rest of the assembly, has two explanations: First, by highlighting the leaders, it implicitly indicates the rest. Second, the old text says that in this original assembly only Śākyamuni remained; only the four tathāgatas and Ruciraketu returned, while the rest were still present. Why? Because the exposition was not yet complete. Below, when preaching on the three bodies, the assembly is not re-gathered; how could it say, "Ākāśagarbha arose from his seat in the midst of the great assembly"? Question: Why did Ruciraketu Bodhisattva return alone, given that the preaching was not yet finished? Answer: In order to initiate the practice of repentance. If he did not return home to sleep, how could he dream of the golden drum? Question: Why did he not request it directly, rather than waiting for a dream? Because the practice is difficult, the dream serves as an omen. Furthermore, the conditions and capacities were such.
