Commentary: 3. Transforming the jewelled thrones has four parts: 1. The substance of the thrones: that the thrones are four represents that the four kinds of born beings can all attain Buddhahood; thus they are made of four jewels, just as is the place where the lion king resides. The 'four jewels' are: first, gold; second, silver; third, vaiḍūrya; fourth, sphaṭika; representing the four fearlessnesses. 'Over which were spread celestial jewelled garments and so on': second, clarifying the furnishings, representing their pure livelihood. 'Furthermore, upon these thrones and so on': third, the adornments, representing departing from saṃsāra and attaining the seven flowers of awakening. Being adorned with precious gems also represents being adorned by the seven noble treasures. 4. The measure of the thrones: the jewelled thrones match the bodies, hence they are 'equal in measure to the Tathāgatas'. Because it was not through the power of Ruciraketu, it says 'spontaneously appeared'.
