Commentary: Below, it clarifies by relying on similes. There are two: first, two similes illustrate the two benefits; later, one clarifies the adornment. The first is further divided into two: first, one simile and its application clarify the function of benefiting others; later, one simile and its application clarify the function of benefiting oneself. This is the first simile. 'False conceptualisation and thinking' illustrates the wisdom of tathatā naturally being able to give rise to thoughts of benefiting others. As the Lotus Sūtra and other texts say: "During three times seven days, I thought about such matters." Calling it 'false conceptualisation' illustrates that it does not actually think, but provisionally gives rise to thought. 'Explains various afflictions' illustrates that the transformation body explains various afflictions for the sake of the two vehicles. 'Various actions' illustrates giving rise to the responsive body to explain various actions for bodhisattvas. 'Various karmic retributions' illustrates causing others, having heard the Dharma, to attain mundane and supramundane fruits. Or, this simile illustrates that due to severing the three hindrances, one accomplishes the three bodies: explaining various afflictions causes one to attain the responsive body; explaining various actions causes one to attain the transformation body; explaining various retributions causes one to attain the dharmakāya. Therefore the text below says: "Purification of the hindrance of defilement can manifest the responsive body; purification of the hindrance of karma can manifest the transformation body; purification of the hindrance of knowables can manifest the dharmakāya." Retribution is precisely subsumed under the hindrance of knowables. Although the Buddhabhūmisūtraśāstra states that the two hindrances each have karma initiated by them and fruits attained by them, retributions are collectively spoken of as the support of latent impressions. Only when retribution is absent are the latent impressions completely exhausted. Another explanation: According to the application text below, explaining various afflictions illustrates expounding the Great Vehicle, because the Great Vehicle is the root and has residual karma, resembling having defilements, karma, and fruits. Karma and fruit respectively illustrate the pratyekabuddha and the śrāvaka, because the higher is able to transform the lower, just as the pratyekabuddha vehicle transforms the śrāvaka. Retribution illustrates expounding the śrāvaka vehicle. However, when the pratyekabuddha vehicle is about to attain the fruit, it does not rely on verbal teachings; at the beginning of generating the aspiration, in the stages of understanding and cultivation, it must rely on verbal teachings. Therefore in the Lotus Sūtra it is said of both: "Because of hearing the Dharma from the Buddha." The first explanation illustrates manifesting the bodies; the next explanation illustrates causing them to attain the bodies; the last explanation illustrates expounding the Dharma for the sake of conversion. Since it has been determined to be a simile for benefiting others, this explanation is thorough in principle; generally clarifying function and application then extends to all three explanations. Another explanation: The simile for the functions of the two benefits is general, while simultaneously illustrating benefiting others is specific, and therefore it extends to the three explanations. However, in the text of the application, it only applies it to expounding the Dharma to benefit others, while the rest are omitted without being applied.
