Commentary: Second is the simile of using the inferior to illustrate the superior. The text also has two parts: namely, the simile and the application. This is the first. When a bodhisattva enters the concentration of cessation, since the six consciousnesses do not operate and there is no conceptual differentiation, there are also various transformation activities. Question: Why not adduce the inferior simile of the two vehicles? Answer: Because when the two vehicles enter the concentration of cessation, they cannot give rise to activities. In the second fascicle of the Vimalakīrtinirdeśa, Vimalakīrti scolds Śāriputra, saying: "As for quiet sitting, not rising from the concentration of cessation yet manifesting all deportments—this is quiet sitting," and so forth. The meaning of the concentration of cessation is broadly explained elsewhere. The concentration of cessation illustrates tathatā; the previous vows illustrate the fundamental vows; performing activities illustrates the responsive and transformation activities and functions.
