Commentary: Below, the doubts of worldly, unlearned persons are eliminated. There are also two similes: first, a simile of an existent entity is given—though without conceptual discrimination, a reflection nonetheless arises; second, a simile of a non-entity is given—though without conceptual discrimination, a reflection also arises. The previous two [similes] were also like this. [For] having entered nirvāṇa, a non-entity was given. [For] arising from the meditative absorption of cessation, an existent entity was given. Now, within [the simile of] an existent entity, first is the simile and second is the application. This is the simile. Tripiṭaka Master Paramārtha says: "The sun and moon illustrate tathatā; the water and mirror illustrate the primal vow and compassion; the light illustrates the wisdom of tathatā; the reflection illustrates the response and transformation bodies." Now it is also explained: According to the subsequent application text, it already says: "Because of the mastery of the vow, when sentient beings have receptivity, the response and transformation bodies appear." The reflection appearing in water illustrates the power of meditative concentration and vows associated with phenomena and tathatā; the arising of the reflection in a mirror illustrates the spiritual capacity of sentient beings; the sun and moon illustrate the phenomenon of tathatā; the light illustrates the wisdom of tathatā. According to the Mahāyānasaṃgraha, the water illustrates sentient beings because of their moist and smooth nature endowed with samādhi, thereby manifesting the reflection of the moon and so forth. That is, water and mirror both illustrate the capacity of sentient beings; the sun and moon illustrate the phenomenon of tathatā and the wisdom of tathatā; the light illustrates the primal vow. Although without conceptual discrimination, nevertheless, due to the primal vow and the power of receptivity of sentient beings, the response and transformation bodies thus exist. However, according to the sūtra's saying: "just as water and a mirror are without conceptual discrimination," then the former explanation is superior. According to the subsequent application text's saying: "Because of the power of the mastery of the vow, when sentient beings have receptivity," then the latter explanation is superior. One may adopt or reject either at will.
