The commentary says: This lists the three characteristics. The three characteristics are the three natures; as extensively distinguished elsewhere, here their names are briefly explained and their essences distinguished. In 'characteristic of the conceptualized', 'conceptualized' (parikalpita) means pervading (pari) and calculating (kalpita); because of pervading and calculating all objects, it is called conceptualized. Conceptualizing refers to both the conceptualizer and the conceptualized, both being named parikalpa. 'What is grasped' refers to the conceptualized nature (parikalpitasvabhāva). Or, characteristic is simply nature, and is also the objective characteristic. Arising in dependence on other diverse conditions, it is named the dependent (paratantra). The meaning of characteristic is as before. Completely accomplished, it is named the perfected characteristic (pariniṣpanna). Grasped self and dharmas are the conceptualized nature; mind, mental factors, form, and non-associated [formations] are the dependent; tathatā is the essence of the perfected. If distinguished by uncontaminated and contaminated: the uncontaminated five aggregates are also the fully perfected, while those of contaminated nature are also the dependent.
