Commentary: Explaining the attainment of the bodies. The first two bodies newly arise, and are therefore spoken of as 'attained.' The dharmakāya is fundamentally existing, so it is said to 'attain reaching the dharmakāya.' This can be understood following the previous [explanation]. Question: At what times respectively are these three bodies attained? Answer: According to the Mahāyānasūtrālaṃkāra, Vijñaptimātratāsiddhi, and so forth, they all arise only after the vajropamasamādhi, on the stage of Buddhahood. That treatise says: 'The three nirmāṇakāyas refer to the various tathāgatas transforming and manifesting immeasurable nirmāṇakāyas conforming to types through the kṛtyānuṣṭhānajñāna.' The Buddhabhūmi[sūtra]śāstra says: 'The kṛtyānuṣṭhānajñāna initiates transformations of the three karmas. According to an incorrect view, this wisdom is attained from the first bhūmi upwards; the correct view is that it arises only on the stage of Buddhahood. Because on the ten bhūmis pure consciousness is produced based on defiled faculties, brightness and obscurity differ, and therefore it cannot arise. The body arisen through the samatājñāna and [ādarśajñāna] is collectively named the saṃbhogakāya. Therefore it arises on the stage of Buddhahood. The mirror-wisdom is not present on the ten bhūmis; the dharmakāya is likewise, because the stage free from bondage is called the dharmakāya.' The Vijñaptimātratāsiddhi says: 'Because it is called the dharmakāya in the Great Sage.' This is according to the complete attainment. If according to partial attainment and approximate attainment, the stages have prior and posterior: on the stage of the ten faiths, one partially attains the nirmāṇakāya, since those bodhisattvas are admitted to accomplish [awakening] through the eight aspects; from the first bhūmi upwards, one attains the saṃbhogakāya and dharmakāya. The Suvikrāntavikrāmiparipṛcchā-prajñāpāramitā speaks of ten dharmakāyas, because one is attained on each of the ten bhūmis. Because higher-stage bodhisattvas transform lower-stage ones, they partially attain the two bodies.
