3.111

贊曰：此即勸修也。明不修不得，返顯修者即得。初法、後喻。此法也。明眾生不修，不得此大涅槃諸佛菩薩常所住處。問：此明得果次第，未辨修行次第，何故勸修？答：果起依修，欲生下修行次第，所以明也。故下喻意合明因果也。

Commentary: This is an exhortation to cultivate. It explains that without cultivation it cannot be attained, conversely showing that those who cultivate will attain it. First is the doctrine, then the simile. This is the doctrine. It explains that ordinary beings do not cultivate and therefore do not attain this great nirvāṇa, the permanent dwelling place of all Buddhas and bodhisattvas. Question: This explains the sequence of attaining the fruit without yet clarifying the sequence of cultivation; why is there an exhortation to cultivate? Answer: The fruit arises relying on cultivation; wishing to introduce the sequence of cultivation below, it is therefore explained here. Thus the intent of the similes below brings together both cause and fruit.
