The Commentary states: This verse praises the virtue of severing others' saṃsāra. When it mentions 'violent torrent,' it refers to the four violent torrents: 1. the violent torrent of desire, which is the afflictions abandoned by cultivation in the desire realm; 2. [the violent torrent of] existence, which is the afflictions abandoned by cultivation in the upper two realms; 3. [the violent torrent of] views, which is the afflictions abandoned by vision in the three realms; 4. the violent torrent of ignorance, which is ignorance of vision and cultivation in the three realms. Accordingly, the first three all exclude ignorance. However, treatises explain afflictions as violent torrents based on the cause; here, explaining the suffering of saṃsāra as a violent torrent speaks of the result. Or else cause and effect are combined under the name of saṃsāra, where old age, sickness, and sorrow drift and drown sentient beings like a violent torrent, deep and wide and difficult to cross like an ocean of suffering. Fascicle seventy of the *Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra* says: "There are five things similar between the great ocean of saṃsāra and what receives the name of great ocean: 1. because their locations are similarly boundless; 2. because they are similarly profound; 3. because they are similarly difficult to cross; 4. because they are similarly inedible—this means that the great ocean is completely bitter and cannot be drunk, and saṃsāra is likewise entirely joyless; 5. because they are similarly what great treasures rely upon (the meaning is that all treasures rely upon the ocean, and only within saṃsāra are the merits of the three vehicles obtained)." Among these five meanings, here the first four are taken, saying it is difficult to endure, and the sunlight of the Buddha's wisdom shines and causes it to dry up.
