The chapter "Eradication of Karmic Obstacles" is analyzed through three gateways: first, the purpose of its occurrence; second, the explanation of the title; third, the resolution of objections. As for the purpose of its occurrence, there are three: First, in clarifying the eradication of evil, in the preceding chapter the repentance was heard in a dream as an awakening, whereas now the method of repentance is directly demonstrated to eradicate [faults]; therefore, following the preceding chapter, this chapter arises. The second purpose: Ruciraketu had planted wholesome roots for a long time, so based on the dream he could repent by himself; but the rest of the assembly could not awaken on their own and only understood how to repent and eradicate [faults] through the Buddha's teaching. Therefore, the Buddha further emits light to summon those who have the karmic affinity, and based on their request, broadly explains it for them; thus, following the preceding chapter, this chapter arises. Third: those who wish to seek supreme fruits must cultivate wonderful causes; while obstacles and difficulties still exist, how could they initiate practice? Wishing to initiate wonderful practice, one must first cause them to eradicate obstacles. Ruciraketu merely recounted his dream but had not yet repented himself; wishing to disclose and confess on his own, he requests the Buddha to teach the method of repentance and eradication; therefore, following the preceding chapter, this chapter arises.
