Commentary: These five deadly sins are commonly spoken of across the three vehicles. Taken together, among the unshared deadly sins of the Mahāyāna, this corresponds to the fourth deadly sin. Slandering the True Dharma also constitutes disrupting the Saṅgha: slandering the Buddha's Noble Eightfold Path as not being the correct path and proclaiming the "five practices" as the correct path; hence it is called slandering the True Dharma. As for the "five practices," this text is not found in the Mahāyāna; according to fascicle 116 of the Sarvāstivāda Mahāvibhāṣā: "What are the five practices? 1. Wearing rag-robes for one's whole life; 2. Begging for food for one's whole life; 3. Eating in a single sitting for one's whole life; 4. Always residing in an open, remote place for one's whole life; 5. Not eating any fish, meat, salt, ghee, milk, and so forth for one's whole life." The Nyāyānusāra and Vinaya-saṃgraha explain the five differently, as detailed there. Alternatively, slandering the True Dharma is the second deadly sin of the Mahāyāna; that it is explained here before disrupting the Saṅgha is because slandering the Buddha's True Dharma is similar [in gravity], so it is stated here, not that it belongs to disrupting the Saṅgha.
