Commentary: Below explains the reason why repentance eradicates hindrances, which is resolving an objection. The text is again divided into two parts: first, resolving the objection; and later, from “If there is a good man…” onwards, concluding that repentance can eradicate all evils. In the first part, there are three sections: 1. explaining according to the gate of causes and conditions; 2. explaining according to the gate of signlessness from the second “Why is this?” onwards; 3. explaining according to the gate of tathatā from “Good man, all phenomena…” onwards. Here, according to the gate of causes and conditions, it first questions and then explains. This is the question. The intent of the question says: Good and evil are distinct from each other, arising and ceasing before and after; for what reason can repentance eradicate [evil]? Another intent of the question says: When evil is present, the repentant mind has not arisen; when the repentant mind arises, that which has already arisen has passed away into non-existence, that which has not arisen abides in the future and is likewise non-existent, and in the present they do not coexist, for light and darkness do not stand together. Furthermore, the present ceases as soon as it arises; from what cause is it said that repentance eradicates [evil]?
