Commentary: Third, explaining the reason for eradication through repentance according to the gate of tathatā. First it explains, next questions, and then resolves. This is the explanation. The fundamental essence of all phenomena is tathatā; as the Śrīmālādevī-sūtra says: “To serve as support, to maintain, and to establish.” As the Vimalakīrti-sūtra says: “All phenomena are established from the non-abiding root.” Because the fundamental tathatā is without arising and ceasing and is ineffable, therefore all phenomena return to the fundamental, are without arising and ceasing, and are also ineffable; and their arising and ceasing are likewise equally non-existent. The preceding gate of signlessness spoke of being without arising and ceasing, by which it may be implicitly known that the gate of tathatā is likewise without arising and ceasing; hence this is omitted for brevity. Clarifying ineffability in the gate of tathatā implicitly shows that the gate of signlessness is also ineffable. This is to eliminate the imaginary nature (parikalpitasvabhāva) of marks of the expresser and the expressed, thus completely subsuming all delusions.
