Commentary: Next, the explanation has three parts: inquiring, explaining, and concluding. The divisions of the text are clear. This meaning should be identical to what Samantabhadra asked in the Saddharmapuṇḍarīkasūtra: 'How is one able to obtain this Lotus Sūtra?' The Buddha answered: 'By accomplishing four dharmas.' Among these, the first is entering the collection of definite rectitude and having deep faith in the three vehicles, which is called 'the accomplishment of right mindfulness'; not taking refuge in non-Buddhist paths is called 'not giving rise to deviant thoughts.' The second is being protected and remembered by the buddhas: being able not to produce slander toward the profound principle, which is being protected and remembered by the buddhas because one's faculties are mature. The third is planting the roots of multiple virtues: being able to generate the aspiration for all-knowledge toward newly practicing bodhisattvas is planting roots of goodness. The fourth is generating the mind to rescue all sentient beings: giving rise to immeasurable loving-kindness enables giving joy to others, and also giving rise to compassion enables pulling them out of suffering. Provisionally based on the initial statement, it says 'immeasurable loving-kindness'; based on complete causes, it is said that accomplishing the four dharmas can remove karmic hindrances. If one accomplishes them partially, one can also repent partially.
