Commentary: Section five clarifies the cultivation of practice. The intention is: when each of the ten grounds practices one pāramitā, how does one cultivate it? That is, one must cultivate both concentration and wisdom together; hence Asabhāva's commentary on the Mahāyānasaṃgraha states: 'In ground after ground one cultivates śamatha and vipaśyanā, cultivating them by means of five aspects,' as explained extensively there. However, explanations in various places regarding the quantity of cultivation differ from one another, so they cannot be cited in full. Why does it only speak of the two approaches of calming and insight as cultivation? Answer: Asabhāva explains: 'Because they can counteract all scattered agitations, one attains the wisdom that can counteract all inversions, cultivating these two in ground after ground.' Yet here, this sūtra speaks only of the calming category, because concentration can lead to signless, correct wisdom, being the base of wisdom. However, in terms of each of the ten grounds cultivating concentration separately, this mutually illuminates those other texts. The textual passage is divided into three parts: first, identifying the person capable of cultivation; next, clarifying the concentrations cultivated; and finally, the general conclusion. Concentration giving rise to giving is called the Wonderful Treasure Samādhi. 'Samā' means equal, 'dhi' means holding; equally holding the mind and causing it to abide on an object. Because the older phonetic transliteration was corrupted, it was called 'sanmei'. Concentration being able to give rise to morality is called the Delightful Samādhi, because one who observes moral discipline is delightedly seen by all; or it is explained in terms of the uncontaminated path-concomitant moral discipline. Concentration being able to give rise to forbearance is the Hard to Shake Samādhi. Concentration generating diligence is called the Non-retrogressing Samādhi. Because concentration can be the supreme cause of merit, it is called the Jewel Flower Samādhi. Concentration being able to generate wisdom is called the Solar Disc Radiance Samādhi. Concentration being able to generate skillful upāya is called the Fulfillment of All Vows as Desired. Concentration being able to generate wisdom that spontaneously can realize the wondrous signless principle is called Directly Realizing. Concentration generating the four unimpeded eloquences is called the Treasury of Wisdom. Concentration generating supernormal powers and vast activities is called Courageous Advance.
