Commentary: The following two verses praise the virtue of abandonment: the first verse praises non-abiding nirvāṇa, and the latter verse praises [nirvāṇa] without remainder. This is also great nirvāṇa, which is precisely the Dharma body. 'Destroy' means eradicate. Unlike the two vehicles, he does not perpetually eradicate saṃsāra as the extreme of cessation, nor does he delight in abiding in nirvāṇa as the extreme of existence; that is, he clings neither to emptiness nor to existence. Free from these two extremes, he is therefore able to realize non-abiding nirvāṇa. 'Nirvāṇa' is an imprecise Sanskrit term; properly it should be parinirvāṇa, translated here as 'complete quiescence' (yuanji), the meaning of which was explained before. This applies also to the causal stages, where it is not yet named 'most pure'.
