Commentary: 'Expounding.' There are thirty-five verses, divided broadly into three: first, twenty verses of praise; next, one verse of dedication (pariṇāmanā); last, fourteen verses of making vows (praṇidhāna). Praising has two parts: first, fifteen verses praising the Buddha's physical body (rūpakāya); next, five verses from 'All the past' onward praising the Buddha's name-body (nāmakāya). In praising the physical body, first is one verse devoutly presenting the praise; next, thirteen verses praising individually according to virtues; last, one verse concluding the boundless praise. This is the first. The first line presents what should be praised; one line gives the dwelling place of those praised; one line expresses homage through the three actions (trīṇi karmāṇi). 'Utmost' (至) means wholehearted and exclusive. 'Sincerity' (誠) means real. 'Bowing' (稽) means reaching. 'Head' (首) means the head. Reaching the ground with the head is called 'bowing the head' (稽首). 'Homage' (禮) means reverence. Here it encompasses the three actions, not merely homage with the head: raising and displaying bodily action manifests mind and speech. Focusing intently on the object is called 'single-minded' (一心), not meaning a single kṣaṇa, etc. One line presents the praise: declaring fine qualities is called 'praising' (讚); giving expression by evoking affairs is called 'extolling' (歎).
