Commentary: The specific instructions. Within this, there are eight: first, the preliminary expedients for reciting the mantra; second, the location; third, the adornment; fourth, the time; fifth, the purification; sixth, the offerings; seventh, from 'entering the ritual site' onward, the actual practice, which contains nine points: 1. taking refuge and paying homage, 2. repentance, 3. devout reverence, 4. the number of recitations, 5. making aspirations, 6. the place and time of eating, 7. what should be eaten, dyeing it black being also permissible, 8. knowing moderation, 9. the time limit; eighth, from 'this can cause' onward, the fulfillment of wishes, which has two parts: first, those with great merit fulfill their wishes in two [times] seven days; second, from 'if one's wishes are not met' onward, those whose evil karma is heavy set another deadline and practice again as before. This is divided into two grades; based on other practices, there are mostly three grades. This is either based on faculties being sharp or dull, or on obstacles having three grades, or on the three grades of cultivation—as in the case of seeking Samantabhadra, where it may take one, two, or three seven-day periods, or it may differ according to the lightness or heaviness of karma over lifetimes. Here it is also like this; the textual divisions follow the outline.
