贊曰：別明十二。此初無明也。非神我等起、非自性等因生，云本無。但眾緣有，明緣生義。無正慧，明妄失正慧說為無明。

The Commentary says: This specifically clarifies the twelve [links]. This is the first, ignorance. It does not arise from a spiritual self (puruṣa) or the like, nor is it produced from a cause such as primordial matter (prakṛti); hence it is said to be "originally nonexistent." It exists solely through multiple conditions, which clarifies the meaning of conditioned arising. Lacking correct wisdom clarifies that falsely losing correct wisdom is described as ignorance.
