Commentary: The main text is divided into six parts: first, the devī asks questions; second, from 'The Buddha said to the virtuous devī' onward, the World-Honoured One answers with the method of training and learning; third, from 'At that time, when the World-Honoured One had finished speaking these words' onward, the devī comprehends, upholds, and cultivates the learning; fourth, from 'When this chapter was spoken' onward, clarifying the extent of the benefit gained by the assembly at that time upon hearing the sūtra; fifth, from 'Brahmā, this Golden Light' onward, comparative measurement reveals its superiority to cause them to receive and practice it; sixth, from 'At that time, the Great Brahmā King' onward, the devas, hearing the command, vow to protect and circulate it. In the first part, there are three subdivisions: first, the devī makes her request; next, the World-Honoured One grants permission; finally, she formally puts forth the request. In the first subdivision, there are five: first, identifying the person making the request; second, clarifying the place of the request; third, stating the cause of the request; fourth, describing the manner of the request; fifth, presenting the entreaty. Here there are three. Contemplating emptiness in accordance with one's wishes is called 'as-one-wishes' (cintā); the manifestation of wondrous wisdom because of it is called 'jewel light' (maṇiprabhā); destroying the darkness of the two hindrances is called 'radiance'; freedom from defilement and sovereignty is termed 'deva'; generating and increasing the goods of the bhūmis is called 'female' (devī). The above explains the name of the petitioner. It also expresses that contemplating emptiness can produce superior wisdom, destroy one's own and others' hindrances, and generate and increase the goods of the bhūmis; hence this deva makes the request. Because a bodhisattva's vows of compassion are endowed with great supernormal powers, manifesting forms according to beings so that all obtain benefit, this bodhisattva transformed into a female form. Question: On which bhūmi does this bodhisattva reside? Answer: According to Tripiṭaka Master Paramārtha, she is on the eighth bhūmi or above. Also, because she causes [others] to realize anutpattikadharmakṣānti, this may perhaps be the sixth bhūmi. According to the previous signs of attaining a bhūmi, the signs of the sixth bhūmi are the ability to purify realms, causing pools of seven-jeweled lotuses to appear throughout the worlds; therefore, below, after she makes her vow, the realms are purified and flowers arise, which should correspond to the sixth bhūmi. 'In the great assembly' is the place of the request. 'Having heard the profound Dharma spoken' and so forth is the cause of the request. Bodily delight is called 'rejoicing' (huan); mental delight is called 'joy' (xi). 'Leaping with joy' (yongyue) means treading bare-footed and jumping.
