4.40

下別通，有三：初約菩提。《文殊問發菩提心經》云「菩提者但有名字，世俗故說。」論釋云：示現可證法，但有名用虛妄分別，其體無實故。此意所證但名字假設，故云世俗。若如名取，即虛妄分別，其體無實。能詮名假，所詮亦爾。上約法明。

The specific resolution below has three parts: first, in terms of bodhi. The *Mañjuśrī-paripṛcchā-bodhicitta-sūtra* says: "Bodhi has merely a name; it is spoken of conventionally." The treatise explains: manifesting dharmas that can be realized, it has merely nominal function through false discrimination, for its essence lacks reality. This means that what is realized is merely a nominal designation, hence it says "conventionally." If one grasps it according to the name, that is false discrimination, and its essence lacks reality. The designating name is provisional, and that which is designated is likewise. The above is clarified in terms of dharmas.
