Commentary: Next below, the doctrine and the analogies extensively illuminate this. The intention is that because the dharmadhātu is free from the eight negations, therefore, reliant upon the five skandhas, the dharmadhātu can be manifested. First, it provisionally adduces non-arising to explain it; next, it extends by analogy non-cessation and so forth. The text is divided into four parts: first, the doctrine; next, from "Devī, it is like the sound of a drum" downwards, the analogical explanation; third, from "If it cannot arise" downwards, extending by analogy the remaining seven negations; fourth, from "Therefore know that the five skandhas are neither existent nor non-existent" downwards, the general concluding establishment. In the first part, the doctrinal explanation, there are three: first, provisionally raising a query to introduce what preceded; second, setting forth the thesis; third, explaining the reason. This covers the first two. The intention of setting forth the thesis is to say that the five skandhas do not arise, refuting the parikalpita nature. By relying on the absence of the parikalpita, the dharmadhātu is then able to be manifested; thus the five skandhas and the dharmadhātu are neither identical nor different, and so forth.
