The Commentary says: The Brahmā King inquires into the characteristics of cultivation. There are four [inquiries]: first, inquiring how one's contemplation, understanding, and mastery are; second, inquiring how one cultivates the practice of bodhi; third, inquiring on what basis one initiates the cultivation and teaching; fourth, inquiring how much benefit is obtained. Within the first, first is the question, second is the answer. This is the first question. The text has two [parts]: first, the person who makes the request. "Sahā" is translated here as "endurance world," meaning saṃsāra, in which there are many enmities and difficulties that bodhisattvas are able to endure. As for the Brahmā King, he is said to be either the king of the first dhyāna or the king of the fourth dhyāna, because he is the lord of the great trichiliocosm. Second, the one who is addressed. Directly putting forward the question: This practice of bodhi is free from the four propositions, transcends the eight negations, is beyond verbal expression, cuts off discursive thought, is neither ultimate nor conventional; it is not known by the two vehicles and cannot be fathomed by ordinary people, being difficult to understand and know. How have you now attained mastery of wisdom and contemplation with respect to the practice of bodhi?
